Giulia Lorusso, composer

Giulia Lorusso is an Italian composer based in Paris. She studied piano and composition at the Giuseppe Verdi Conservatory in Milan with Alessandro Solbiati. She continued her studies in Paris at the IRCAM and obtained a Master's degree at the Conservatoire de Paris (CNSMDP) with Frédéric Durieux. She was also student in Vincent Lê Quang's generative improvisation class.

Lorusso's repertoire includes instrumental and electroacoustic works that incorporate new technologies, exploring the dynamic relationship between performer, audience and technological devices, as well as the interaction between sound and space.

His compositions have been commissioned by prestigious institutions such as IRCAM - Centre Pompidou, the GMEM in Marseille, the Donaueschinger Musiktage, Radio France and ProQuartet, and have been performed by renowned ensembles such as the Brussels Philharmonic, the Tana Quartet, the Ditotima Quartet, the 2e2m Ensemble, the United Instruments of Lucilin and the Proxima Centauri Ensemble, among others.

Villa Médicis resident for 2025-2026, Giulia Lorusso has been composer-in-residence at the ZKM (Zentrum für Kunst und Medien) in Karlsruhe, the European University of Cyprus (EUC), the Fondation Royaumont (Incubator project) and the Fondazione Spinola-Banna per l'arte in Turin. Lorusso has been associate composer with Ensemble 2e2m for the 2023-2024 season. In 2023 she received the SACEM Hervé Dugardin Prize and in 2024 the Premio Una vita nella musica giovani.

Lorusso's catalogue also includes interdisciplinary works exploring installations, interaction, experimental musical theatre and collective composition. She has collaborated with researchers at INRIA (Institut national de recherche en sciences et technologies du numérique) in Paris, philosophers such as Emanuele Coccia and Rosario Diana, visual artists such as Jessica Rimondi and Kesson Dalef, as well as dancers and puppeteers.

In particular, his interactive installation Fabrica was featured in the Réseaux Monde exhibition at the Centre Pompidou in 2021. Fabrica a été présentée dans l’exposition Réseaux Monde au Centre Pompidou en 2021.

Lorusso is also actively involved in teaching, both as a teacher and a pedagogue. She was a guest teacher at the first edition of the Académie MIXTE, organised by Ensemble Proxima Centauri in Bordeaux, France. She has taught composition at bachelor and master levels in Italy, at the Conservatorio di Pesaro and the Conservatorio di Vibo Valentia.
