Proxima Centauri is a musical ensemble that has been involved in contemporary music for over thirty years. With its singular palette of sounds (piano, flute, percussion, saxophone, electronics), it renews chamber music by integrating electroacoustics as a full-fledged member of the ensemble.

Since its creation, Proxima Centauri has collaborated with a number of musicians, performers and improvisers, as well as artists from the fields of dance, visual arts and theatre. In this way, the ensemble promotes a multi-disciplinary artistic approach at the crossroads of the arts, combining musical creation, visual arts and, occasionally, audience participation.

Under the artistic direction of Marie-Bernadette Charrier, the ensemble follows an active commissioning policy and creates many works by composers of this century, alternating with the interpretation of the great masters of the 20th century. Proxima Centauri invests also research in contemporary instrument-making.

Internationally renowned, the ensemble is invited to numerous festivals and tours in Europe, America, Asia and Oceania.

Formed as an association and based in Bordeaux since 1991, the ensemble develops a strong cultural season through a series of events that regularly reach out to all audiences - OPUS, SPOT, Festival MÀD, Académie MIXTE - in partnership with cultural institutions and associations. Transmission is at the heart of the ensemble's activities, with its programme of artistic and cultural education for primary and secondary schools; its educational programme for students at the Bordeaux Jacques Thibaud Conservatoire and the PESMD - Pôle d'Enseignement Supérieur de Musique et de Danse Bordeaux Nouvelle-Aquitaine; and through the Académie MIXTE, an international academy of musical creation for young composers and performers that it is now developing throughout the Nouvelle Aquitaine region.
