Proxima Centauri

Proxima Centauri

Proxima Centauri is a musical ensemble that has been involved in contemporary music for over thirty years. With a singular palette of sounds (piano, flute, percussion, saxophone, electronics), it shakes up chamber music by integrating electroacoustics as a full-fledged member of the group, and by giving a major place to the saxophone, for which it contributes to creating a contemporary repertoire.

Since its creation, Proxima Centauri has collaborated with a number of musicians, performers and improvisers, as well as artists from the fields of dance, visual arts and theatre. In this way, the ensemble promotes a multi-disciplinary artistic approach at the crossroads of the arts, combining musical creation, visual arts and, occasionally, audience participation.

Under the artistic direction of Marie-Bernadette Charrier, the ensemble aims to be a driving force in contemporary music by pursuing an active commissioning policy, premiering numerous works by contemporary composers, bringing to life the great figures of the 20th century and contributing to research into contemporary lute-making. Passing on knowledge to young performers has been a major focus of its activity from the outset.

Proxima Centauri also collaborates extensively in its home territory, both in its concerts and artistic education program, regularly reaching out to new audiences. With an international reputation, the ensemble has been invited to many festivals and made numerous tours in Europe, America, Asia and Oceania.
